Horses for Hope is a therapeutic riding program that offers women of all ages and diverse backgrounds the opportunity to heal emotional and physical wounds, experience the great outdoors, experience an alternative to traditional fitness and exercise, increase their knowledge and understanding of nutrition, participate in a different form of therapy, and offer a unique environment for individual and family interaction. The program targets women with physical and mental health issues/disabilities, women facing domestic difficulties, teenagers, widows, female retirees, single mothers, senior citizens and young professionals. According to acclaimed writer and horsewoman, Mary Midkiff, “Horses keep us healthy. Better than any psychiatry session or workout in a gym, a horse is the best form of therapy.” Mary Midkiff has written several books on women and horses, is a notable lecturer on the topic and author of dozens of published papers. (See
www.womenandhorses.com) Horses for Hope offers women an alternative to traditional therapies. In an unusual way, it couples several forms of therapy into an organic method of healing, learning, strength and muscle development, regaining self-awareness, slef-esteeem, confidence and communication. By coupling women from various eco-social backgrounds, ages, and experiences, MTR believes that role modeling within the group will occur. Outcomes will include growth in self-awareness, self esteem and self-confidence as well as a greater understanding and appreciation for volunteerism.
